Removing and Installing the Spark Plugs
Tools Required:
  • 8mm, 10mm and 5/8" Hex Spark Plug Socket
  • Anti-Seize
  • Long Extension
  • Ratchet
  • Spark Plug Gapping Tool
  • Torque Wrench
Torque Specifiction:
  • Spark Plugs = 11 lb-ft or 15 Nm
  • Ignition Coil Cover Bolts = 89 lb-in or 10 Nm
- Begin by taking off the ignition coil cover bolts with a 10mm socket.

Note: The passenger side will require the use of an 8mm socket in order to take off the intake tube before you can access the ignition coil cover bolts.

Warning: Do Not over torque the ignition coil cover bolts when installing everything back. Applying to much torque can snap the head off the bolt!

Step 1
- After the bolts are removed, remove the ignition coil cover from the valve cover. This will expose the coil-on-plugs (AKA COP).

Note: Remove any debris around the COP before moving on to the next step.

Step 2
- There are two ways to remove the ignition coil before you can access the spark plugs.

Option 1: One way of removing the ignition coil is to simply pull up on the ignition coil with the connector still attached to it. You can place the entire assembly near by.

Option 2: The other option of removing the ignition coil is to disconnect it from the connector. In order to release the connector from the ignition coil, use your thumbs fingernail and push down on the release TAB. You should now be able to disconnect it by pulling the connector outwards. As shown on the pictures.

Warning: When disconnecting the connector from the ignition coil, be very careful not to push down to hard on the release TAB. The release TAB is known to break, so handle them with care. Also, never tug on the connector wires when disconnecting it from the ignition coil. The wires could get disconnected from the connector.

Here is a picture of the ignition coil unplugged and removed.

Note: The Ford Manual recommends that any re-used spark plugs be installed in the original cylinder it came out from.

Step 4
- Be sure to check the new spark plug gaps before you install them. If all the gaps are equal and meet the desired gap, apply a dab of Anti-Seize on the threads. Start the spark plugs by hand until they are finger tight and torque them down to the proper torque specs or follow the after market Manufactures Recommendation.

Reverse the above procedure when installing everything back and be sure that all of the Connectors and Vacuum Lines are connected!
